Drawing in sketchbooks scares me a lot. The fact that I have a book filled with this special drawing paper makes me feel like I have to put it to good use and make every single page pretty. Almost as if if I don’t, then I’m “wasting” the sketchbook or something. It’s just so intimidating. I prefer “normal” spiral notebooks.

I don’t feel the fear problem with the above kind of sketchbook but if I was using fancier and more expensive sketchbooks (moleskin, paper made from angel butt hairs, etc) I would probably freeze up.

Shit is expensive and I don’t want to waste any part of that paper.

Draw on what makes you feel good? IDK guys, I don’t see how you can waste sketchbooks unless you draw on five pages and then stop drawing in that sketchbook (which I have totally done!) I mean if you are drawing how are you wasting paper? Sketchbooks are about sketching not about making your masterpiece, and this is from a girl who draws random things in moleskins—but I mean, for me it is more about paper texture not about how much it cost. I have friends that love printer paper, if your favourite thing to draw on is printer paper then make a sketchbook out of printer paper. I like moleskins cause they don’t fall apart …

I am extremely guilty of this. I was raised on cheap photo copy paper because we couldn’t afford to go out of our way to buy a “proper” sketch book, and when we finally did… well, on top of the paper texture being completely alien to me, I became intimidated.

When I started to fill a sketchbook, I quickly disliked it because I had to shuffle through old drawings I was unhappy with to find a clean page. I couldn’t erase without ripping the paper up. I felt like I was using it wrong. I put it on the shelf until I was either A) out of paper or B) had proper supplies, whichever came first.

Spoiler alert: B never happened. Neither did A, but by that point I’d started working digitally.

And I also felt restricted; I either had to hide my sketchbook entirely or make sure whatever I DID draw was appropriate for all audiences (no nudes, no story ideas, no venting, etc) because my peers had been known to steal my drawings to go through them, and sometimes return to me violated, even when I was drawing with loose paper kept in my clipboard/box thing. Eventually, I stopped drawing publicly altogether because of this.

I still draw on paper sometimes, but I’ve grown all too dependent on Photoshop and Paint Tool SAI.

BUT I digress. As the cats in spats say, draw on what you like to draw! If you like printer paper, make a book out of printer paper. Or don’t make a book at all. Get a clipboard and keep it loose.

Remember, not having a store-bought sketchbook does not mean you are not an artist.

I’ve always had this problem where I felt I had to make every page in my sketchbooks perfect, and its a problem I still have now. The result is a few nice drawings, but in the end its stopped me from drawing as much and as often as I should, as well as difficulties developing ideas. I’ve been trying to loosen up by scribbling, doodling, making notes and so on, just to get in the habit of drawing in my sketchbook. A blank page, especially in a nice sketchbook such as a moleskine is very intimidating, so I’m trying something new in the last pages of my current one. I’ve gone ahead and altered, doodled, drawn on or painted on each page just so it’s no longer blank. I’m hoping it will ease the fear of a “new page” and just encourage me to be experimental and expressive in my sketchbook. We’ll see how it goes.

I haven’t felt the need to reblog in a while—hell, I deleted my entire blog and started over a while ago. Though this is something I completely agree with.

I’ve always had a talent for art, but i didn’t get my own art supplies (beyond crappy Rosa Art Crayons and quick dry markers) till high school. Until then, I would draw on regular paper and in lined notebooks (CRINGE). Eventually my mom, who also draws, would give me some of her newsprint. it was cheep and it could be cut up in tons of pieces, I had painted and colored with colored pencils when I was in elementary and middle school and eventually got to try all mediums in high school. Though, my mom had a challenge for me. She told me that when I could ddraw myself, she’d buy me my first set of supplies.

I believe it was my sophomore year that I drew a picture in an art class in BALL POINT PEN and took it home, that my mom said, well damn. She took me out, grabbed me water color paper, newsprint, my own set of Prismacolors—a big 64 set—drawing pencils and sketch pads. She gave me, from her own collection, a water color set, and oil pastels. It was pretty awesome. For my first two years I never used that stuff “properly” I would sketch on a paper and move on. Very few things I did were ever “finished works”. I spent so much time on my artwork for school, that I didn’t really invest in my own stuff. All the work I DID end up having had the likeness of copyrighted art (X-men, The Crow, Garfield, etc) so I couldn’t use it to get into art school and ran out of time to create anything original. ON top of that, I had been TAUGHT how to use a hard bound sketch book FINALLY…and then…fell out of drawing.

Even now, I still draw—a lot more than I used to—but it’s hard NOT to think of a page of my sexy black hardbound sketchbook as a piece of work. I never sketch, its always a work in progress or a snippet or something I wanted to finish, but never do. I think I’ve owned…a total of 5 hardbound notebooks. One from high school—my first—that pretty much fell apart and is just bound paper now and far from full. My second, for a drawing class…that I cannot find for the life of me now…My third, a small 5x8 that I bought and drew in, but then left at a friends house (3 years ago) and she moved. The last two are the most recent. Ones that I actually invested in for school and for me. I drew in both, but one is on my person at all times now. It doesn’t have much in it…but I hope to actually fill my pages. I can actually say I am EMBARRASSED to not have completely full sketch pages. I also am embarrassed because certain subject matter in my drawing pad is inappropriate to show to just anyone. I have some beautiful work now…that I only feel comfortable showing the internet before my family and friends…

On my facebook I have a few artistic friends that for some reason were all over the scene with drawing monkeys and baboons in photoshop last year. It was obvious exercise, but I was inspired when I saw this picture on my dash. It was originally posted by slapdashing who posts wonderful inspiration for graphic design, typography, you name it! These two cards (a third yet to be made) were a labor of love. I really wanted to give something to my fam and with no cash to spare this was it. The rest of my Valentines Day sharing is gonna be straight up anti-vday, but these I worked damn hard on. For one, I only had 4 colored pencils, drawing paper and fountain pen to work with. I haven’t been this proud of myself in a while. Heck, I’m proud of the fact that my kerning wasn’t half bad and I managed to “create” two different fonts. How bout DEM apples? Happy Valentines Day y’all! Oh and for everyone who’s like “Bob?”…that’s a super old nick name of mine…lol inside joke.
